Overcoming Opposition in God’s Work: Lessons from Nehemiah

When doing God’s work, opposition is inevitable. However, through Nehemiah’s example, we learn that God provides the help needed to complete His work despite resistance.

What Forms Does Opposition Take?

Opposition to God’s work can manifest in various ways:

  • Psychological warfare
  • False reports and lies
  • Threats and intimidation
  • Physical attacks
  • Evil plotting

How Does God Help Us Overcome Opposition?

1. By Inspiring Us with His Work

Nehemiah was passionate about rebuilding Jerusalem’s wall because he understood its significance for restoring worship and God’s covenant. This passion made him immovable in the face of opposition. Similarly, we need passion for the Great Commission and its message of hope and salvation.

2. Through Prayer and Supernatural Strength

When Nehemiah faced overwhelming opposition, he prayed “O God, strengthen my hands.” God responds to such prayers by providing supernatural strength beyond our natural abilities. Prayer unleashes heaven’s resources and fortifies our faith.

3. By Granting Discernment

God helped Nehemiah recognize false prophets and deceptive schemes. This discernment comes through:

  • Regular Bible reading
  • Scripture memorization
  • The Holy Spirit’s guidance
  • Knowledge of God’s Word

4. Through Divine Protection

God provides protection by:

  • Exposing enemies and their plans
  • Demoralizing opposition
  • Bringing important information to light
  • Maintaining awareness of who supports or opposes the work

Life Application

The enemy works tirelessly to oppose God’s work, but we can overcome through God’s help. Consider these questions:

  • Where do you need God’s strength in your current ministry or mission?
  • Are you regularly studying God’s Word to develop spiritual discernment?
  • Have you been passionate about God’s work, or do you need to start taking action to develop that passion?

This week’s challenge: Choose one area of ministry or service where you’ve felt opposition, and commit to:

  • Pray daily for God’s strength
  • Study relevant Scripture passages
  • Take concrete steps to move forward despite resistance
  • Trust God for protection and discernment

Remember: Opposition doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong – it often means you’re doing something right for God’s kingdom.
