Choosing a college is one of the most important decisions that Sr. High students can make. We take our 10th grade-college aged students to visit different campuses each semester. March 27-29 we will be visiting Hardin Simmons, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. We will take campus tours at each school and also be meeting with ministers and students from local churches some of the cities.  Cost of the event is $20. You will need to check out of school for that Thursday and Friday. Parents are encouraged to attend.
See Darrell or sign up in the youth room.

Every fall semester we have our Disciple Now weekend here at Lakeland Baptist Church.  This is a discipleship intensive weekend in which the students are grouped together in small groups by gender and grade, and these small groups stay at the homes of adults within our congregation. Leaders from other areas and churches are brought in to teach Bible studies in these small groups based on the theme for the weekend. Three to four times during the weekend, all students from all homes gather at the church for a corporate time of worship featuring music and Bible teaching provided by the guest speaker and band for the weekend. We also usually have a crazy activity for the weekend such as make your own Christian rap video, make your own sitcom, Scavenger Hunts etc.

We will celebrate the big game once again on February 1, 2009.  Stay tuned for news about the guest speaker, amazing inflatables and more for the 2009 party.  My prediction for this year’s game is the Cowboys vs. Steelers.

At the Spring Retreat on April 25-27 we will dive into The Bible with Student Minister Darrell Halk allowing God to challenge us, refresh us and renew us through His Word.  The students will experience: Passionate Worship led by Huntsville’s Kevin Dixon, Goofy Games with our very own Mike Holscher and a secret mystery activity on Saturday Night.  We will be heading to Falls Creek, Oklahoma.  Students need to meet at Lakeland on 5 pm on Friday. Cost will be $40/person (this includes lodging and 3 meals). Chaperons are $10. No one gets turned away because of $$ - see Darrell or email him at dhalk@lakelandbaptist.org . And of course . . . parents and college students can also attend if they desire.

Not all details are in yet, but we do know the date: March 14-20, 2009. This event is open to college students as well.

We make graduation a special time at Lakeland. On May18 we will be dedicating our worship service to honoring God by recognizing and commissioning our graduates. Afterward we will take them out for a lunch honoring this passage in their lives. Parents are welcome to attend with us (lunch is covered for the students only). And then there is the Senior Trip! We will be heading to San Diego, Ca on July 30-August 4 (Cost $350- does not include meals). And then there is the annual “Eating of the Oyster” for all seniors on the trip …

World Changers is a mission trip organization through the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.
Students are placed in teams of 12 youth w/adult leaders to share Christ’s love through renovating people’s homes. Every night there is a worship service that ties it together. It is an incredible experience. We have done nearly 18 projects at Lakeland. We will be going to Pine Bluff, Arkansas on June 14-21. This is an All Youth, Middle School through College. On a World Changers Community Project, students from middle school to college are exposed to an exciting blend of community ministries and construction opportunities as they reach out in love to a city. Hundreds of children, youth, and adults will be touched through relationship ministries in urban settings. This is one event that we make sure that no one is turned away due to $$$. Training, parents’ meeting and further details will be out soon.  Cost is $160.

This year we will attend Camp 220 at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas the week of July 21-25, 2008.  Students will experience intense worship led by John Sherrill Band and deep Bible lessons preached by Matt Sheppard.  We will also experience crazy and messy games led by the HBU Rec Team.  This camp is a leadership driven camp and is deeper than your average church camp.  The cost for camp is $245 and this camp is open for middle school through college.  This camp will be life changing for many of your students.  Last year many students lives were altered forever by their Camp 220 experience.

Here are some of the quotes from students:
Kelsie Pinckard- ” At Camp God showed me the tiniest glimpse of the vastness of His impossible unconditional love…and it blew my mind.” :Andrew Miller- ” At camp 220 God showed me that He can change your life in a split second. That He can make you see things that you never thought that you would be able to see and that you can forgive people no matter how bad they have hurt you in the past.” : Ragan Forson- “At Camp 220 God showed me that no matter how big or small the situation is, when you let God take control of it, He can change your life forever. :)”: Emily Jasper- ”At Camp 220 God showed me that he is my true master and his love can overcome any fear or worry that I have! Also that he truly can make me whole again…never really got that saying until camp! yay!”

We will be going to Falls Creek—the largest youth camp in the world! We will be staying in our own cabin and enjoying the incredible youth camp experience that is Falls Creek on June 30- July 5, 2008.  This year’s speaker is Deron Spoo and the worship will be led by Jeff Johnson.  The camp is intended for those completing 6th grade-completing 8th grade although high school students are welcome to attend.  The cost is $135 for students and $50 for chaperons, provisions can be made for families who have more than one student attending. See Darrell Halk for more details.  You can also visit www.skopos.org  or http://lakelandbaptiststudents.blogspot.com for future updates on camp.
